Associate General Counsel, Privacy, will be responsible for advising internal business partners on data use rights, compliance with privacy laws and regulations, and compliance with cybersecurity obligations of our clients. This position will develop and implement related policies, practices, and training programs, and help business stakeholders understand and address data rights, data protection and privacy issues as they emerge.

Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with Zelis’ information technology, product, and internal business teams to provide legal advice in support of Zelis’ strategic initiatives. This support will include counseling on a wide variety of technology transactions and initiatives involving data rights, data use, data privacy protection, information security matters, technology procurement, and consumer facing applications.

  • Support and advise Zelis’ business teams on efforts to develop and build out offshore operations, including review and negotiation of client contracts related to same

  • Maintain current knowledge of alterations in legislation and regulatory requirements including any data rights, data use, and security and privacy laws to proactively counsel business units and manage legal exposure

  • Design and conduct awareness and training efforts to enhance team member understanding of data rights, data privacy obligations and compliance, data privacy policies, data handling practices and procedures

  • Draft and review agreements, contracts and other legal documents

  • Give accurate and timely counsel to internal clients

  • Research and evaluate different risk factors regarding business decisions and operations

  • Apply effective risk management techniques and offer proactive advice on possible legal issues

  • Support litigation and investigations as needed within assigned business area

  • Partner with outside counsel as required

  • Maintain and promote a positive can-do attitude and professional demeanor

Skills:

  • 7+ years of experience at a law firm or in-house, with some in-house experience, with knowledge of and experience with privacy regulatory and legal frameworks including HIPAA, state privacy laws, TCPA and CAN-SPAM

  • Substantial experience assessing legal risks relating to data protection and privacy

  • Experience negotiating commercial contracts, including security and privacy provisions

  • Demonstrated accountability and keen ability to meet aggressive time frames

  • Excellent knowledge and understanding of business law

  • Exceptional analytical and communication skills

  • High degree of professional ethics and integrity

  • Demonstrated ability to create legal defensive or proactive strategies

  • Sound judgment and ability to analyze situations and information

  • Handle disputes that may arise in existing commercial relationships

  • Provide guidance and support to our cross-functional colleagues on a wide range of legal issues including data protection/privacy laws, data security, copyright and trademark matters, consumer protection laws relating to advertising and product performance claims, and other global legal frameworks, as needed

Experiences/Background:

  • J.D. degree from an accredited law school, admitted to practice

  • 7+ years of experience; with some in-house experience required
